How Many Cards Do You Deal in Go Fish?

Short answer
Deal seven cards to each player when two people play Go Fish. Deal five cards to each player when three or four people play. With a standard 52-card deck, that leaves 38 cards in a two-player pond, 37 cards with three players, or 32 cards with four players.
The starting hand changes with the number of players so a two-player game has enough information in each hand while larger tables preserve enough cards in the pond. These counts match the standard rules used by Go Fish Online.

Why do two players receive seven cards?
At a two-player table, seven-card hands create more possible requests at the start and reduce long stretches of blind drawing. With three or four players, five-card hands leave a larger shared pond and make information from multiple opponents more important.
What happens to the undealt cards?
Place every undealt card face down to form the fishing pond. A player draws one card from this pond after an opponent says Go Fish. Nobody may inspect or rearrange the pond to choose a card.
Do you remove books from the starting hand?
If the deal gives a player all four cards of one rank, place that completed book in the player’s scoring area immediately. Continue with the remaining hand; the online table detects and records the book automatically.
What if a player runs out of cards?
When a hand becomes empty and cards remain in the pond, refill the hand so that player can continue. Go Fish Online deals a legal replacement hand automatically. If the pond is empty, the player waits while the other hands finish.
Can you use a different card count?
Yes, as a house variation. Five cards each can produce a shorter first game for children, while seven cards each can reduce the pond at larger tables. Agree on the deal before shuffling and use the same count for every player.
