Short answer
For two-player Go Fish, deal seven cards to each player and place the other 38 cards in the pond. Players ask each other for ranks they already hold, keep playing after successful requests or matching draws, and score one point for every completed book of four.
Go Fish works especially well with two players. The rules stay simple, but each answer gives your opponent valuable information, making memory and timing more important than in a larger game.

Shuffle a standard 52-card deck and deal seven cards to each player. Place the other 38 cards face down as the pond. Each player groups matching ranks privately, and either player may take the first turn.
How turns work
Ask your opponent for a rank already in your hand. If they have one or more matching cards, they give you all of them and you ask again. If they have none, draw one card. A matching draw keeps your turn; any other draw ends it.
Completing books and refilling
Place four cards of the same rank into your book area immediately. If those cards leave your hand empty and the pond still contains cards, draw a fresh hand from the pond. The online table performs both actions automatically.
How a two-player game ends
The game ends after all 13 books are complete, or when the pond and both hands are empty. Count the books. The player with more wins; equal totals are a tie.
Simple head-to-head strategy
Track every rank your opponent requests, because that request proves they hold at least one card of it. Also remember which of your requests failed. After your opponent draws, a previously failed rank may become useful to ask for again.
- Finish nearly complete books before revealing interest in many new ranks.
- Use successful turns to test ranks your opponent previously requested.
- When your memory is uncertain, ask about a rank for which you hold several cards.
